Donut Dash is the primal test of one's ability to eat, run, and do good. Established at Carnegie Mellon University, Donut Dash is a fun run that challenges participants to run a full mile, devour a half-dozen donuts and run yet another carb-infused mile before crossing the finish line!

That's the experience Mario and Nathalie Lemieux had with the birth of their son, Austin, in 1996. At that time, they had two toddlers under the age of three, with a newborn that spent 71 days in the NICU. It was after this personal experience that Mario and Nathalie recognized the need to help other young families facing challenging situations in medical facilities, and the idea for Austin's Playrooms was born. The Mario Lemieux Foundation's Austin's Playrooms initiative seeks to benefit families and improve the quality of a child's hospital experience, whether as a visitor or patient, by establishing cheerful playrooms that are safe, calming and comfortable.
The Mario Lemieux Foundation has opened 33 Austin's Playrooms in western Pennsylvania as well as three playrooms in military hospitals across the country. Starting in 2018, Donut Dash is excited and honored to support the Austin's Playrooms initiative by aiming to raise $500,000 in the next five years for the construction and care of Austin's Playrooms in the Pittsburgh region.
4 miles & 4 donuts….for hospitalized children!
Every March (or May in 2021) the Donut Dash is held in Land Park with a *stop at Marie's Donuts. Participants start in Land Park then run, jog, or walk 2 miles to Marie's Donuts. At Marie's, participants consume 4 donuts (competitive division) OR 6 donut holes OR nothing at all before making their way back the 2 miles to the start/finish area. *In 2021, the course will be a 1 mile loop inside William Land Park, and donut holes will be the only option.
Proceeds from the Donut Dash are used to benefit hospitalized children via the Child Life Programs at Sutter Children's Center, Sacramento & UC Davis Children's Hospital. Donated funds are used for programs including Beads of Courage & Music Therapy. Activities funded include 24/7 movie channels, virtual reality goggles, augmented reality, video game machines, iPad's, art projects, games, toys, movies, video games, and exercise equipment. These programs and activities are designed to help children and families cope with their medical experiences, educate children about their illnesses, prepare them for procedures and surgeries, offer normal childhood play experiences, and celebrate holidays and special events during hospitalization.
After a successful first Donut Dash in 2009, Donut Dash 501(c)3 was started in 2010 to raise funds for the Child Life Program at Sutter Children's Center, Sacramento. Starting with Donut Dash Ate in 2016, the Child Life Program at UC Davis Children's Hospital was added as a beneficiary. Scent of aurora mac os. This expansion has allowed Donut Dash funds to benefit even more hospitalized children!
